Seeing a counsellor or psychologist
If you want to talk to someone properly, your GP is the cheapest front door. In Australia, a GP can put together a Mental Health Treatment Plan, which gives you Medicare-subsidised sessions with a registered psychologist or counsellor each year. You don’t need to be in crisis to ask — “I’ve been having a rough time and want to talk to someone” is enough.
- Book a longer GP appointment and say you’d like to talk about your mental health.
- Ask whether a Mental Health Treatment Plan is right for you.
- They can refer you to someone who fits — and you can ask for a bloke, or someone who works with men, if that’s easier.
Reaching out isn’t admitting you’re “the problem,” and it isn’t proving anyone right. It’s getting a clear, neutral read from someone who isn’t in the argument with you. That’s useful whether the label was fair or not.
